ApiOmics: The Science-Based Future of Queen Rearing
Rayons de Miel is proud to contribute to the ApiOmics project , a cutting-edge research program in genomics applied to beekeeping, led by the Giovenazzo Laboratory at Laval University and funded by Génome Québec .
This project aims to improve queen breeding and selection using modern genomics tools – an approach never before seen on this scale in Canada.
What is ApiOmics?
ApiOmics (2023–2026) is a collaborative research project that combines beekeeping knowledge with “-omics” technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, etc.), to:
- Identify genetic biomarkers linked to colony performance (disease resistance, longevity, productivity, etc.).
- Develop new selection tools to support breeders in choosing superior queens.
- Accelerate genetic progress while ensuring adaptation to Quebec climatic conditions .
This project involves close collaboration between researchers, bioinformaticians, beekeepers and technicians across Quebec.
Our role at Honeycombs
As a specialist breeder, Rayons de Miel actively participates in the ApiOmics project by:
- Providing queens for genomic analysis;
- Collaborating in the collection of field data (behavior, survival, performance);
- Providing its know-how, its beehives and its experience in large-scale breeding.
We firmly believe that the future of livestock farming lies in the alliance of scientific research and beekeeping practice . This is why we are proud to be among the few breeders partnering in this innovative project.
